Merry Christmas, from Rusty

Merry Christmas! My family is very busy this year, so I am writing the 2010 Christmas Newsletter. The Year 2010 has been a good year for me. Food, a nice bed in the corner of the room, an occasional bone to chew on, but I do more than eat and sleep.

The year started out well, getting up early in the morning, going for a morning run with the one called MOM. An interesting thing happened as time went on. I went from pulling her behind me to her choking me to death because she was running too fast. She finally started leaving me at home to sleep in the corner until the one called DAD got out of bed. MOM seems to have lots of energy, as I overheard her telling people she ran 26.2 miles really, really fast, and is now going to go to this place called Boston to do it again. I know I am just a dog, but as the one SARAH would say, “What the heck?” You run 26.2 miles, no bone dangling in front of you to keep you going, and then you decide to do it again? Let’s just say I am grateful I get to sleep in now as my paws just can’t take that pounding any more.

Saturdays are pretty special days for me. All the 2-legs, as I like to call them, are home. The biggest one, called DAD lets me run around outside, even in the front yard while he cuts and trims my natural urinals. Not sure what that is all about as I always make it point to water them every time they give me 2 seconds out front. I have noticed DAD still wears suits a lot and does lots of service at church. He works to put food in my red bowl but is usually happy about doing it. The major change for DAD is he does not drive the same 4-wheeled thing he used too. He now has a big white one called a TRUCK. I thought he was growling at me the first day he came home with it because I could see all his teeth, but I figured out he was just smiling. I try to join in the fun of wrestling whenever I get the chance as it is almost a daily occurrence that DAD is wrestling with the smaller 2-legs.

Have I mentioned I get lots of headaches? Some days I really wish I could talk to yell, STOP. The one called TOMMY as these round orange things that he bounces up and down, up and down, up and down…..you get my point. I don’t know if it is my supersized ears or what, but that ball bouncing gives me the biggest headache! I even go outside to get some peace and quite, and what do you know, there he is again practicing outside and throwing it up in the air through a round orange circle. Basketball is what 2-legs call it I think. He seems to have basketball on his brain about as much as I do. He loves to watch it on TV, and I heard he actually was able to go to a playoff game last year because he received straight “A’s” at school. I am not sure what that is all about, but I would get all “A’s” if they would give me another bone to chew on!

Another point I would like to remind you of is that I am a pure bred bird dog. I have bird hunting in my blood. The one called AUSTIN is a man after my own heart. He catches about as many as I do, but he loves to shoot his gun at the birds in our yard. If he ever hits one I am ready to go pick it up. He is outside a lot building things, playing with his gun, and cutting on wood with his knife. You have to be careful around him obviously, especially when he has a rope in his hands because he can tie all kinds of different knots. Speaking of knots, AUSTIN brought back some things called shells after going to the beach and Knott’s Berry Farm. I would like to give you more details, BUT I was left with a “friend” so I am not even sure what or where that beach thing is. One of these days they will remember us 4-legs are a 2-legs best friend.

Have I mentioned one of my favorite things are bones? When I think about bones this year it reminds me of the one they call SAMMY. We were all enjoying an evening of wrestling and playing when my ears detected a strange sound. Yep, SAMMY broke one of his bones, just above one of his upper paws. Looks to me to be pretty painful, but he did not cry much and he came home with a big colorful thing on his arm. I was pretty amazed he could still use it to write when he went to 2-leg training (school is the term they use). He had to stop playing basketball because of the broken bone, but he still loved to wrestle even with the dangerous club on his arm. I have a hard time telling who is older, SAMMY or AUSTIN as they are almost the same size. I only remember SAMMY being around for about 5 2-leg years, so he must be younger, but he is pretty big. Luckily, he is very nice and is not mean because he could squash me like a piece of bacon if he wanted to.

Last but certainly not least, I need to bring up the fact that my reign of being the best looking animal in the house may be over. The littlest 2-leg is called SARAH. She is so cute and sweet, I just want to go up and lick her. I have learned to hold myself back because she carries a swift kick and powerful punch. I think she may have picked up a thing or two from the older 2-legs. She has also been doing these pretty moves called DANCE. She just loves dance and she really loves her friends. I admit, I do get a little jealous as 2-leg visitors used to say how beautiful I was, but now they look right past me and talk about the beautiful SARAH. I have learned to hide when all of Sarah’s friends come over for preschool because they are mostly of the female variety packing brushes, and no dog in their right mind wants to be made up like a doll.

My busy schedule dictates it is nap time yet again. Before I hit the tile for a nice winter’s nap, I would like to say,
Merry Christmas to All,
and to All a Good Night!

Love,

Rusty

Peppermint Twist

Marissa, Olivia, Sarah

The most precious thing happened last Saturday - these three darlings  performed in their first dance recital.  Their routine was called the "Peppermind Twist."

Sarah and I

I was a stage mom with my good friend, Tiffany (Marissa's mom).  We got to stay back stage and entertain the girls during the show.  The only bummer was that we didn't get to see any of the other performances, but it was super fun getting to sit backstage and interact with the girls.

Sarah, Marissa, and Olivia after their performance.

Sarah and Jim

Sarah and Jim also performed in a Daddy/Daughter Dance.  They have been practicing just about every  night for a couple of weeks.  It was such a great experience for them.

Below are two videos.  The first is of the Peppermint Twist.  Sarah is the three one over on the back row. The second video is of the very end of the Daddy/Daughter Dance.  Jim and Sarah are the second ones over.  I only caught the end because I was having a hard time finding a good angle. (another perk of being a stage mom was that I got to take video from the side rather than in the audience).

Traditions

One of the reasons I love Christmastime so much is because of all the traditions.  One of our traditions it to make Gingerbread,  I mean, Graham Cracker Houses.  This year we went over to Dan and Kodi's house.  It was nice to only have to show up.

Austin

Sarah

Sammy

Tommy was having to much fun playing at Kodi's house so he never made one there.  However, a couple of days later his friend, Matthew, invited him over and they made real Gingerbread Houses.

In addition to these house each of them got to make another graham cracker house at school.

Cookie Exchange

For the past 5 years, a few of us have hosted a cookie exchange party.  A cookie exchange party is where everyone makes a bunch of cookies or other holiday treat and then everyone takes a few of each treat.  It has become a fun tradition.

In addition to the cookie exchange, we have a white elephant gift. I have made it a tradition to do some type of calendar.  The first year, I gave my normal family calendar.  I thought it would be funny for someone to hang a calendar of some other family in their home.  Then I did my infamous swimsuit edition.  Last year, I did a "History of the Swimsuit" with my face on a bunch of swimsuit models from the early 1900s.  This year I did a P90X Calendar in honor of my P90X experience ove rthe past several months.  Since so people were not able to make it I wanted to share it with everyone (who am I kidding?!?! There were tons of people there, but I for some reason I am compelled to publicly embarass myself - what is wrong with me?)

And just so I give credit where credit is due - These are actual things that Tony Horton says during the exercise videos.  The only one I made changes on was the yoga one, I put my age in rather than his.

Well, there's the calendar.  Who is the lucky winner???

MaryAnn (Allyson's sister).  Sadly, for MaryAnn it got stolen from her.  Each gift can be stolen twice.  I think Brea ended up with the calendar.

Some of the other hot items included (there were tons but I only got pictuers of a few):

Aubrey got the bedazzled toilet plunger made by Tiffany, but that's not all.

It came with a matching bra so she could plunge the toilet in style.  Sadly, again, Aubrey got this fantastic gift stolen from her.  I believe Vikki ended up with.

Sarah got this Ms. Claus tee from Denise...but i don't know who ended up with it.

This Santa hat was also a favorite.  The picture isn't the best, but it is a hat of a chimney with Santa's legs sticking up.

#1 reason we need a truck

Many have heard this story (or versions of it).   When I was young I had many requirements for my future eternal companion.  I will share two (albeit not necessarily essential, but requirements nonetheless)- doctor and truck owner.  When Jim and I first started dating he was driving around a Toyota Tacoma AND he was majoring in pre-med.  Needless to say, things were looking pretty good.  We got engaged.

A few months later, he took the MCAT, then he shadowed a doctor for a couple of weeks.  After following the doctor around and about two weeks before we were to get married he told me that he didn't want to be a doctor and he was going to be a teacher.  Now don't get me wrong, I love teachers, both of Jim's parents are teachers.  Jim is a natural teacher; he tutored math and science all through college.  Also I have thought about getting my teaching certificate as well.  However, as a 19-year-old I just went from a doctor's salary to a teacher's salary, but I was good with that.  I knew we could make it work...besides at that point any type of salary looked good considering we had NONE.

We got married.  We were happy.  Then the realization hit us that we really didn't have any money, in particular we didn't have enough money to put gas in that truck as often as it needed gas.  So we talked to Jim's parents and since they were the ones who actually bought the truck for Jim, we gave it back and they gave us the Geo Metro Jim drove around in high school.

So now here I am barely married to this guy who no longer owns a truck and is no longer going to be a doctor...poor me, right?  NOT!!!  I am so glad Jim is not a doctor.  Again, I love doctors, I really do, but they have to go to school for FOREVER and most of them have A LOT of debt from school loans AND most of them work very long hours and Jim would have been miserable, I would have been miserable.  The only reason I felt bad about the truck is because I knew how much Jim loves having a truck.  Besides it is much easier to park a Geo Metro.

To help us feel better every year since January 1998, Jim and I write down 1-year goals, 5-year goals and 10-year goals.  Every year the truck makes it on one of the lists (usually the 5-year list).

Okay, so where is this story going -- JIM FINALLY GOT A TRUCK!

Jim's Toyota Camry had over 149,000 miles on it.  The nice thing about it was that it was paid off, but every couple of months we were having to get something fixed.  Jim is a logical guy.  If something doesn't make sense he isn't going to do it.  The only way he was going to get a truck was if he NEEDED one.  With the Christmas season quickly approaching one thing helped push him over the edge - the Annual Chirstmas Tree Hunt.

Usually we bum rides with family and friends and then someone else brings our tree home for us.  But not this year the #1 reason we need a truck is...

FOR THE CHRISTMAS TREE HUNT!!!

So we loaded...
Sarah

 Sammy

Tommy

Austin

And even our dog Rusty into the truck.
Yep, we made sure to get a truck that the whole family could fit in.

Jim's lucky streak didn't end, not only is he the proud owner of a truck, he found a Christmas tree.

The whole family!

Funny story:  Dan and Kodi actually cut down this tree - the PERFECT tree.  We had already loaded our tree into the truck, but I wanted a picture so we used their tree.

Sarah is happy.

And here is EVERYONE!!! In all, we left with 9 trees.  And rather than having the Dan/Kodi (friends/neighbors) or Scott (Jim's bro) bring home our Christmas tree, we brought home our own for the first time ever!  In fact, we even brought home a tree for Scott because he wasn't able to make it up there this year.
